# CVE-2026-76461: Cisco Secure Email Gateway SQL Injection Vulnerability

> A vulnerability in the email parsing of Cisco AsyncOS Software for Cisco Secure Email Gateway could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the underlying operating system.

## Key takeaways

- CVE-2026-76461 has CVSS 3.1 9.8 (CRITICAL).
- CISA lists it as actively exploited (added 2026-09-14).
- EPSS estimates a 28.3% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days.
- Required action: Apply mitigations in accordance with vendor instructions, ensuring compliance with CISA’s BOD 26-04 Prioritizing Security Updates Based on Risk (see URL in Notes) guidance and CISA’s “Forensics Triage Requirements” (see URL in Notes). Follow applicable BOD 26-04 guidance for cloud…

## Summary

A vulnerability in the email parsing of Cisco AsyncOS Software for Cisco Secure Email Gateway could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the underlying operating system.

This vulnerability is due to insufficient validation in the email parsing logic. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted email message that contains malicious SQL statements through an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary SQL statements, leading to command execution with root privileges on the underlying operating system.

## What to do

- Apply mitigations in accordance with vendor instructions, ensuring compliance with CISA’s BOD 26-04 Prioritizing Security Updates Based on Risk (see URL in Notes) guidance and CISA’s “Forensics Triage Requirements” (see URL in Notes). Follow applicable BOD 26-04 guidance for cloud services or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable. Stakeholders are responsible for evaluating each asset's internet exposure and ensuring adherence to BOD 26-04 patching guidelines.
- Apply the vendor fix or mitigation:

  - [sec.cloudapps.cisco.com](<https://sec.cloudapps.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory/cisco-sa-esa-inj-2bLVGmhX>)
- Prioritise by exposure: internet-facing and unauthenticated attack paths first.

## Analysis

> **Note:** A critical SQL injection vulnerability in Cisco Secure Email Gateway allows unauthenticated remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL statements through specially crafted email messages. Successful exploitation may lead to complete appliance compromise and remote command execution with root privileges.
>
> **Mitigation:** Upgrade to a Cisco-fixed software version immediately and review system logs for indicators of compromise.
